In writer's workshop, 1st graders have been working on opinion writing. 1st graders have LOTS of opinions but we have learned that the best opinions are supported with reasons why. To practice our opinion writing, students first voted on their favorite season.
In these seasonal groups, students then worked together to brainstorm why they like that season. Many students loved summer for swimming, fall for jumping in leaves and winter for sledding.

Each group wrote their reasons on large chart paper and then presented their work to classmates. Groups made sure to start by stating their opinion, giving multiple reasons and closing with their opinion. This helped us work on being good presenters and audience members.

Summer is the best season since the weather is perfect for doing some of my favorite activities. Summertime is the best time to go to the lake and wakeboard or read a book on the dock. During the summer months I love having tons of time to run outside and then jump right in a pool. Summer is definitely my favorite!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite season is Spring because the whole world seems to wake up from a long winter's rest. The trees begin bloom, the grass is green again, and the beautiful flowers start to poke out from their winter's nap. Best of all, the light of day becomes longer and sunnier each and every day!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite season is summer because I can play street hockey and I like to go swimming and to roller blade and to go for bike ride with my uncle.
ReplyDeleteOut of the 4 seasons summer is my favorite. The nice warm weather means I can sit on the dock or deck and read for hours. I can hop in the boat and watch everyone water ski or wake board or we can just take a tour of the lake. Summer food is yummy! Cooking on the barbecue is always a fun dinner. I also love the fact that I do not have to wear heavy clothes all summer long. I really do love summer time.
