February Vacation Challange

1st graders were given a little extra (optional) homework over vacation.  I have heard all about your travel plans to tropical places, trips up north, and staycation activities.  Now it's time to share them on the blog.  Share a picture or comment anytime this week about what you are up to this vacation.  Double click anywhere on the padlet below to add your comment.  If you'd like to attach a picture then double click to add your sticky note and click the arrow symbol to attach a picture.  I look forward to hearing/seeing your fun vacation posts to come.

We love you because...

I go bananas for you!

First graders spent a wonderful Friday the 13th celebrating Valentine's Day and the 100th day of school.  Thank you to all the parents who donated supplies to our party and our wonderful room mom for all her help.  1st graders had a stupendous time decorating (and eating) adorable heart shaped cookies.

1st Graders (with the help of Mrs. Bourassa) surprised me with this adorable bouquet.  Each student wrote one reason they love me and let me tell you each and everyone was adorable!
Miss Klipfel, we love you because...

I love the boys and girls because of their daily smiling faces.

There is still space left if you have not signed up or any member of your family would still like to sign up to be a mystery reader. Some Wednesdays at 2:30-2:50 in May and June are still available. You may bring a few of your favorite picture books to share with the class or choose from our classroom library. Please email me or send in a sealed note if you or anyone in your family would like to read to our class. All are welcome to come and read but remember, shh it's a secret!

Fancy Day

Fancy Friday, was one exquisite (that's a fancy word for great) day!  It was stupendous to see all the 1st graders dressed in their imaginative posh outfits! Of course, I couldn't resist dressing in my most elegant clothes too.

Students were thrilled (that's even more excited then excited) to complete fancy activities throughout the day. 1st graders read Fancy Nancy books, went on a fancy word hunt, completed word problems on fuschia paper and used elegant vocabulary; looking exquisite while doing it all.  Snack time was transformed (that's a fancy word for changed) into a Tea Party, using our imagination of course.
We also learned about Jane O'Connor and Robin Glasser the author and illustrator of the Fancy Nancy series.  A large part of 1st graders Writer's Workshop is focusing on using word choice in our writing pieces. Our Fancy Word Wall will help 1st grade writers' pieces sparkle and dazzle. We have already added a huge amount of fancy words to our wall. Keep your ears and eyes open for 1st graders using them while speaking and writing.
To end our fabulous Fancy Day, we had a little soiree with Mrs. Thomson and Mrs. Higgins' classes. Students paired up to finish the day with some phenomenal reading.
1st graders (and their teacher) had a splendiferous Fancy Day learning and working, with our pinkies up!

Common Core State Standard L.1.6: Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts, including using frequently occurring adjectives.

Snowmen Should Not...

1st graders have been working with their Kindergarten Buddies over the past few weeks to brainstorm tips for snowmen.  We started by reading Snowmen at Work and listening to Olaf sing "In Summer".  With buddies, students then each completed a sentence of what a snowman should NEVER do.  In partners, students illustrated a snowman in some hot places.  We then used our new favorite app Chatter Pix and made our snowmen come to life.  Check out our video below with everything a snowman should not do.
